From early mornings of shooting at Bhaucha Dhakka fish market, to capturing gritting stories of displacement, livelihood and household culture - this group of 9 mentees, from age 15-27 years, have been working to document lives and stories of people from their own neighborhood- stories that they resonate with.
सुबह भाऊचा धक्का की मछली मंडी में कैमरा लेकर खड़े होने से लेकर, रोज़मर्रा की भागदौड़ और घर–परिवार की दुनिया को दिखाने तक — 15 से 27 साल की उम्र के गोवंडी के 9 युवा अपने ही मोहल्ले के लोगों की ज़िंदगी और उनकी कहानियों को फ़ोटोग्राफी के जरिए बताते हैं। ऐसी कहानियाँ हैं जिनसे ये खुद भी बहुत जुड़ाव महसूस करते हैं।
Khaare Paani Ki Meethi Kahani | ख़ारे पानी की मीठी कहानी | Muskan and Wasim
From the fishing docks to Govandi, Muskan and Wasim bring to life the story of Shamila, a fisherwoman from Govandi whom the photographers chanced upon while selling fish in the neighborhood. Shamila’s story shows her physically demanding work, the dignity she finds in labour, and the quiet pride that she takes in her work. Challenging gender norms, her husband supports her role as the primary worker, reflecting shifting dynamics within her family. In a trade dominated by women and surrounded by local monopolies, Shamila stands firm, assertive, and self-reliant. Her belief – “work is a lifelong commitment, not just necessity” anchors her portrayal.
मछली पकड़ने वाले डॉक से लेकर गोवंडी तक, मुस्कान और वसीम गोवंडी की एक मछुआरिन, शमीला की कहानी बताते हैं, जिनसे फ़ोटोग्राफ़रों की मुलाक़ात उनके मोहल्ले में मछली बेचते वक्त हुई। शमीला की कहानी दिखाती है कि उनका काम कितना मेहनत भरा है, और उन्हें अपने काम में गरिमा और ख़ामोशी से गर्व मिलता है। मपारंपरिक सोच को चुनौती देते हुए, उनका पति उनके मुख्य कामकाजी रोल का समर्थन करता है, जो उनके परिवार में बदलती परिस्थितियों को दिखाता है। महिला-प्रधान इस व्यवसाय में और स्थानीय मोनोपोली के बीच, शमीला आत्मनिर्भर और मजबूती से खड़ी हैं। उनका मानना है – “काम ज़िंदगी भर का साथ है, सिर्फ ज़रूरत नहीं।”
Subah Ki Pehli Khushboo | सुबह की पहली खुशबू | Nafiya and Faizan
Nafiya and Faizan document the work and economic networks of a flower seller, – from Govandi. Following her from Dadar's bustling flower markets to the homes of Sewri, the photographs reveal the peculiarities of her work and social relationships that sustain her livelihood. Living in her own solitude, she remains self-sufficient and unafraid. Familiar with the dark early-morning streets, she moves confidently, supported by door-to-door customers who greet her with care and hospitality. In her everyday life, she finds companionship among friends and her work.
नफ़िया और फैज़ान गोवंडी की एक फूल बेचने वाली महिला के काम और उसकी आर्थिक ज़िन्दगी को कैमरे में कैद करते हैं। दादर के हलचल भरे फूल बाजार से लेकर सिवरी के घरों तक, इन तस्वीरों में उनके काम और उन रिश्तों की झलक मिलती है जो उनकी रोज़ी-रोटी को बनाए रखते हैं। अपनी एकांत में रहते हुए, वह आत्मनिर्भर और निडर हैं। सुबह के अंधेरे रास्तों से अच्छी तरह परिचित, वह आत्मविश्वास के साथ चलती हैं, और उनके घर-घर के ग्राहक उनका आदर और मेहमाननवाज़ी से स्वागत करते हैं। अपनी रोज़मर्रा की ज़िन्दगी में, उन्हें दोस्तों और अपने काम में साथ मिलता है।
Through her photo story, Shakira captures Fahmida, moving from house to house, engaging with women in her community. Through Fahmida’s work at a Bacchat Gat (women’s saving account), run by a local NGO in Natwar Parekh, the photographer documents her routine interactions- when she collects savings, manages contributions and ensures that each member remains actively involved in the group’s shared financial journey. Fahmida’s presence at each doorstep, often accompanied by conversations, trust, and familiarity reflects the relational foundation on which these informal financial systems are built.
Secret Savings | गुप्त बचत | Shakira
शाकिरा अपनी फोटो स्टोरी के ज़रिए फाहमीदा की कहानी दिखाती हैं, जो घर-घर जाकर अपनी मोहल्ले की महिलाओं से मिलती हैं। नटवर परेख में एक स्थानीय NGO के द्वारा चलाए जाने वाले बचत गट (महिलाओं का बचत खाता) में उनका काम रोज़मर्रा के काम-काज और बातचीत से भरा होता है। फाहमीदा बचत इक्कठा करती हैं, ओरतो के योगदान संभालती हैं और यह देखती हैं कि हर सदस्य समूह में शामिल रहे। हर घर पर उनकी मौजूदगी, बातचीत और भरोसा इन छोटे बचत समूहों की मजबूती दिखाती है।
Inspired by an Australian photographer, Jay Weinstein, and his project ‘So I asked them to smile’, Afreen creates a typology of smiling faces from Govandi. As Afreen stumbles across the youth and children of Natwar Parekh, who thinks she rarely smiles – finds herself softly smiling too. In that brief instant, a shared connection is formed, and a portrayal of young smiles comes to be.

ऑस्ट्रेलियाई फ़ोटोग्राफ़र जे वेंस्टीन और उनके प्रोजेक्ट ‘So I asked them to smile ’ से प्रेरित होकर, आफ्रीन गोवंडी के मुस्कुराते चेहरों का एक पोट्रैट बनाती हैं। जब आफ्रीन जो सोचती हैं कि वो शायद ही मुस्कुराती हैं, नटवर पारेख के बच्चों और युवाओ से मिलकर खुद भी धीरे-धीरे मुस्कुरा देती हैं। उस छोटे से पल एक-दुसरे से एक साझा जुड़ाव बन जाता है, और युवाओं की मुस्कान का एक सुंदर चित्र सामने आता है।
Through the fridges of Natwar Parekh, Shilpa traces intimate narratives of sustenance – exploring how food traditions, precarity, and culture intertwine in the lives of the community. The fridge becomes a valuable asset, ideal for keeping meat, fish, spices, medicines, and everyday essentials fresh. As a modern-day convenience, the refrigerator saves time, effort, and frequent market trips, making daily life significantly easier.

शिल्पा नटवर परेख के फ्रिज के जरिए रोज़मर्रा की ज़िंदगी की छोटी-छोटी कहानियाँ दिखाती हैं – यह बताती हैं कि खाने की परंपराएँ, मुश्किलें और संस्कृति कैसे समुदाय के जीवन में जुड़ी हुई हैं। फ्रिज एक बहुत ही जरूरी चीज़ बन जाता है, जहाँ मांस, मछली, मसाले, दवाइयाँ और रोज़मर्रा की जरूरत की चीज़ें ताज़ा रखी जा सकती हैं। आधुनिक सुविधा के रूप में, फ्रिज समय और मेहनत बचाता है और बार-बार बाज़ार जाने की जरूरत कम करता है, जिससे रोज़मर्रा की ज़िंदगी आसान हो जाती है।
Mera Gaon Mera Sheher | मेरा गाँव मेरा शहर | Toyaba
During her stay at Nani’s home, Toyaba captures the serene landscape and lush fields of rural Uttar Pradesh, drawing poignant comparisons from the chaos and noise that surrounds urban life. From open village roads surrounded by natural landscapes to city streets filled with vehicle noise, each frame contrasts two worlds. Village schools, handmade containers called ‘deri’ in urdu, mud roofs - ‘khapdai’, harvest seasons, and children cycling to school reflect simplicity and closeness to nature. In the city, well-equipped schools, cement roofs, and steel containers reveal a more advanced lifestyle. While village life offers rest, open spaces, and natural beauty, urban life, especially in Govandi, limits such experiences, shaping Toyaba’s own shift from outdoor freedom to indoor routines.
नानी के घर रहने के दौरान, तोयबा ने ग्रामीण उत्तर प्रदेश के शांत वातावरण और हरे-भरे खेतों की तस्वीरें खींचीं, और शहर की हलचल और शोर के साथ उनकी तुलना की। खुले गाँव के रास्ते और प्राकृतिक नज़ारे शहर की आवाज़ और गाड़ियों से भरी सड़कों से बिलकुल अलग दिखते हैं। गाँव के स्कूल, मिट्टी के बने बर्तन (उर्दू में ‘दरी’), मिट्टी की छतें (‘खपड़ाई’), कटाई का मौसम और बच्चे साइकिल से स्कूल जाते हुए – सब जीवन की सरलता और प्रकृति के करीब रहने को दिखाते हैं। शहर में अच्छे स्कूल, सीमेंट की छतें और स्टील के बर्तन एक विकसित जीवन दिखाते हैं। जहाँ गाँव की ज़िंदगी आराम, खुली जगह और प्राकृतिक सुंदरता देती है, वहीं मुंबई जैसे शहर मे - खासकर गोवंडी मे ये अनुभव सीमित हैं। इस तरह, तोयबा का जीवन भी गाँव मे बाहर रहने की आज़ादी से घर के भीतर की दिनचर्या में दिखाई देते है।

The public arts mentorship has been a learning and reflective journey for Govandi’s 14 youth artists, who were introduced to the cultural value of art, and reconnected to their talents as fine artists. Through exposure trips across galleries, public spaces and art schools in Mumbai– they have come to recognise the power of community led art and the purpose it holds. Inspired by the stories, hopes and aspirations of their community, these young artists from Govandi come together– using shapes, forms and patterns to create a mural and an installation that communicates the banality of everyday life in Govandi and the resilience, joy and fraternity that defines it.
यह पब्लिक आर्ट मेंटरशिप गोवंडी के १४ युवा कलाकारों के लिए एक सीखने और खुद को पहचानने वाली सफ़र है। इस दौरान उन्होंने कला की अहमियत समझी और अपने अंदर के कलाकार को फिर से खोजा।
मुंबई के अलग-अलग गैलरी, पब्लिक स्पेस और आर्ट स्कूलों में जाकर उन्होंने देखा कि समुदाय के साथ मिलकर बनाई गई कला कितनी ताक़तवर हो सकती है और वे लोगों को जोड़ने का क्या मकसद निभाती है।
अपने ही मोहल्ले की कहानियों, उम्मीदों और सपनों से प्रेरित होकर ये युवा एक साथ आए। उन्होंने आकृतियों, रंगों और पैटर्नस् का उपयोग करके एक म्यूरल (दीवार चित्र) और इंस्टॉलेशन (स्थापना कला) बनाया है।
यह कलाकारी गोवंडी की रोज़मर्रा की ज़िंदगी, वहाँ की एकजुटता, खुशियाँ और आपस की भाईचारे को बड़े ही सरल और खूबसूरत तरीके से दिखाती है।
Har Gully Ek Gaon | हर गली एक गाँव

This textile work is a collaborative tapestry and poetry created by the women of Govandi. What began as a simple mapping exercise of drawing a route from Awaaz, a community space to their homes has now culminated into a visual record of their shared geography, memories, and routines. These maps now include landmarks, streets, gathering spots, local shops, and other places that hold deep emotional and social significance in their daily lives.
Each participant through an unequivocal determination has stitched, embroidered and applied their experience to create this cartography of their neighborhood. While not a literal map, the tapestry is a textured and collective of community storytelling.
यह टेक्सटाइल इंस्टॉलेशन गोवंडी की महिलाओं द्वारा मिलकर बनाई गई एक खूबसूरत टेपेस्ट्री (कपड़े पर कला) और कविता है। इसकी शुरुआत एक आसान-सी एक्टिविटी से हुई, आवाज़, जो एक कम्युनिटी स्पेस है, से अपने घर तक का रास्ता कागज पर बनाने से।
धीरे-धीरे यह एक दृश्य नक्शे में बदल गया जिसमें उनकी यादें, रास्ते, रोज़मर्रा की आदतें और अपने मोहल्ले से जुड़ी अहम चीज़ें शामिल हो गईं।
अब इन नक्शों में गलियाँ, दुकानें, ठहरने की जगहें, मिलने-जुलने वाले चौराहे, और वे जगहें भी शामिल हैं जिनका उनके जीवन में खास भावनात्मक और सामाजिक महत्व है।
हर महिला ने पूरी मेहनत और लगन से कढ़ाई, सिलाई और अपनी कल्पना के ज़रिए अपने अनुभव इस कपड़े पर उतारा हैं।
यह कोई असली नक्शा नहीं है, लेकिन यह एक साझी कहानी है. कहानी उनके मोहल्ले, उनके जीवन और उनकी जुड़ी हुई दुनिया की।

The residency was envisioned as a journey into understanding the inner worlds of young adults in Govandi, using art to surface their unspoken emotions and lived experiences. Through the theme Monsters of My Mind, facilitator Farha Alam, along with guest facilitators Rajat Barmecha, Ryatasha Rathore, Preeti Pannigrahi and Mehak Mirza Prabhu worked with the young adults to create monsters that embody their stories of resilience, struggle, hardship, and joy. These monsters are not to be feared, but befriended—symbols of self-expression and acceptance.
The co-creation process, spanning ideation, dialogue, and artistic outcomes has been documented through audio-visuals. The stories and reflections that emerge now culminate in a collective installation, alongside an open-source toolkit capturing both journey and outcomes.
यह रेज़िडेंसी गोवंडी के युवाओं की अंदरूनी दुनिया को समझने की एक कला-यात्रा थी। इस प्रक्रिया में कला का उपयोग उन भावनाओं और अनुभवों को बाहर लाने के लिए किया गया जो वे अक्सर कह नहीं पाते।
मॉन्स्टर्स ऑफ़ माय माइंड थीम के तहत, फरहा आलम और मेहमान फैसिलिटेटर्स—रजत बर्मेचा, और रयताशा राठौर ने युवाओं के साथ मिलकर ऐसे “मॉन्स्टर्स” बनाए जो उनके संघर्ष, हिम्मत, दुख, डर और खुशियों की कहानियाँ दर्शाते हैं।
ये मॉन्स्टर्स डराने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि दोस्ती और खुद की पहचान को अपनाने का प्रतीक हैं।
पूरी रचनात्मक प्रक्रिया सोच, बात-चीत और कला निर्माण को ऑडियो-वीडियो में रिकॉर्ड किया गया।
अब इन सभी कहानियों, विचारों और कलाकृतियों का नतीजा एक सामूहिक इंस्टॉलेशन के रूप में सामने है, साथ ही एक ओपन-सोर्स टूलकिट भी बनाई गई है, जिसमें इस सफ़र और उसके नतीजों को दर्ज किया गया है।

Through this residency, transgender artists from the Govandi community co-create a vibrant mural and a textile-based artwork in partnership with transgender artists from the Aravani Art Project based in Mumbai. The intention for the residency at Govandi Arts Festival is to open new avenues for transgender inclusion in the arts– encouraging individuals from the community to step into public and creative spaces with pride. This project, both a mural and a textile artwork reflects the lived realities, aspirations, and collective spirit of the transgender community.
इस रेज़िडेंसी में गोवंडी के ट्रांसजेंडर कलाकार और मुंबई के अरावनी आर्ट प्रोजेक्ट के ट्रांसजेंडर कलाकार मिलकर एक रंग-बिरंगा म्यूरल (दीवार पर चित्र) और टेक्सटाइल आर्टवर्क (कपड़े पर बनी कला) बनाते हैं।
इसका मकसद है कि ट्रांसजेंडर समुदाय को कला की दुनिया में ज़्यादा जगह और इज़्ज़त मिले, और वे आत्मविश्वास के साथ सार्वजनिक और रचनात्मक जगहों पर दिखें।
यह कलाकृतियाँ ट्रांसजेंडर समुदाय की रोज़मर्रा की ज़िंदगी, उनके सपने, उनकी मेहनत और उनके आपस के प्यार और सहारे को दिखाता है।

This exhibition traces nearly a decade of Community Design Agency’s work in Govandi, highlighting the non-linear trajectory that is characteristic to participatory, community-driven processes. Through our key initiatives, it explores how each intervention grew from the last, responding to the layered realities of the M/East ward, one of Mumbai’s most underserved and climate-vulnerable regions. Alongside our story, you will encounter the everyday challenges this neighbourhood continues to navigate - of waste, water, heat, housing and health.
Step into our small green nook, a glimpse of what pockets of Natwar Parekh could look like in the near future. Linger, read, and share your experiences of how our homes and our city is changing.
यह प्रदर्शनी गोवंडी में कम्युनिटी डिज़ाइन एजेंसी (CDA) के पिछले लगभग दस वर्षों के सफ़र को दर्शाता है।यह दिखाता है कि कैसे हमारा काम लोगों की भागीदारी से आगे बढ़ा और समय के साथ बदलते हालात के अनुसार विकसित होता गया। आप देख पाएँगे कि हमारी अलग-अलग पहलों के ज़रिए कैसे हर नया कदम, पिछले प्रयासों से जुड़ता गया और मुंबई के सबसे उपेक्षित और जलवायु संकट से प्रभावित इलाकों में से एक, एम/ईस्ट वार्ड की ज़रूरतों के जवाब में आकार लेता गया।
इस पूरी यात्रा के साथ-साथ आप इस कॉलोनी की रोज़मर्रा की समस्याओं को भी समझ पाएँगे, जैसे कचरा, पानी की कमी, बढ़ती गर्मी, घरों की हालत और स्वास्थ्य से जुड़ी चुनौतियाँ।
हमारे इस छोटे से हरे कोने में आइए - यह नटवर पारेख के भविष्य की एक छोटी सी झलक है। यहाँ ठहरिए, पढ़िए और अपने अनुभव साझा कीजिए कि हमारे घर और हमारा शहर किस तरह बदल रहे हैं।

Lanterns made alongside Lamplighter Arts Cic by Avon Indian Association, young refugees and Bristol Refugee Arts Collective have been sent to Govandi Arts Festival 2025 as a gift from Glastonbury Festival Greenfields to share an international message of Peace and Friendship.
